This Creamed Hamburger Bread Bowl is perfect for anyone who loves meat and carbs. This dish offers a twist on the classic creamy hamburger gravy by serving it inside a mini boule of bread. It’s a filling and comforting meal ideal for any night of the week.
I hate to admit it, but New England’s unusually cool August weather has put me in a fall state of mind. The recent stretch of cool, crisp nights feels reminiscent of late September and early October, creating the perfect atmosphere for sleeping. I’ve been reveling in deep slumber under warm layers of blankets while the open windows allow a refreshing nighttime chill to fill the bedroom.
Have you noticed that the daylight hours have gotten shorter? I realized the sad reality when I looked out my kitchen window at 8 p.m. last week and saw it was already dark! What’s that all about?! Only weeks ago, there was daylight at 9 p.m. as I went for my evening walks. I can’t take advantage of that anymore. I just want to get into my comfy jammies after dinner because it looks like bedtime.
Naturally, all sorts of fall-like things have been running through my mind: hot apple cider, autumnal-colored leaves, the smell of wood burning, pumpkin pies, warm checkered jackets, fuzzy knitted mittens, and comfort food. Today’s recipe is a fantastic example of comfort food. Boy, is it yummy! It’s my take on the classic creamy hamburger gravy and biscuit dish. Let me tell you, this bread bowl is hearty, filling, and sure to satisfy your hunger while nourishing you at the same time.
If you like budget-friendly and easy-to-make meals, this soup in a bread bowl fits the bill. It can easily be made in 30 minutes. No lie! It is as simple as browning the ground beef with shallot, garlic, and seasoning. Next comes the white gravy, which is made by whisking butter, flour, milk, seasoning, and cream over medium heat. Combine the beef and the gravy, then pour into a hollowed mini boule. Then there is nothing left to do but to enjoy!
I love everything about this soup, from the savory ground beef to the smooth and creamy gravy that warms the cockles of my heart. Once I have eaten through the cream hamburger soup, there is more goodness waiting for me by way of gravy-soaked bread! YUM!!

Description
This Creamed Hamburger Bread Bowl is perfect for anyone who loves meat and carbs. This dish offers a twist on the classic creamy hamburger gravy by serving it inside a mini boule of bread. It’s a filling and comforting meal ideal for any night of the week.
Ingredients
For the gravy:
Instructions
- Preheat a 10 or 11-inch skillet on medium-high. Add ground beef, shallot, and garlic. Brown beef, using a spatula to break it up into crumbles. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Continue cooking, stirring until the beef is cooked through. Transfer the content into a bowl.
- Reduce heat to medium. Using the same skillet, add butter. Melt. Add flour, whisking continuously for 2 minutes. Gradually whisk in milk. Add salt, pepper, onion powder, and garlic powder. Allow milk to come to a simmer, whisking constantly until milk thickens.
- Add cream. Stir in ground beef mixture. Allow to return to a simmer, and adjust the seasoning to taste. Remove from heat.
- To serve: cut off the top 1/3 of the boule. Use your hands to hollow out the center of the boules, leaving a 3/4-inch wall. Fill with beef and gravy.
- Makes 4 servings.
Notes
- Add a splash of milk if the gravy is too thick.
- Do not allow milk to come to a rolling boil to prevent curdling or boiling over.

Why does winter feel so long and summer so short? I'm not ready for it to be dark before dinner time! A bowl of comfort food is just what I need right now :). Have a great weekend, Thao!
We had a high of 69 degrees today 🙁 Have a wonderful holiday weekend, my friend!
I don't like the shorter daylight time, but I love all things fall so I'm excited for that! Also, a 30 minute soup served in a bread bowl?! Yes please! So hearty and delicious; perfect for the cooler months coming up ahead.
Happy September, Marie! I like fall too, but once the trees are bare, it's all downhill from there 🙁
Mmmm, total comfort food! I'll eat anything out of a bread bowl, and this looks extra delicious!
I think bread bowls are so inviting. Thank you for stopping by, Liz!
This bread bowl looks so pretty and delicious! What a great addition to any table. Take care.
this looks so cozy! i'm so accustomed to seeing clam chowder in bread bowls (i spend a lot of time in san francisco and probably go to disneyland too much) that it bores me, but this sounds just as creamy but much more exciting (:
Thank you, Stacey!
Lucky you! I've never been to San Francisco or Disneyland (I've been to Disney World). I'd love to spend to some in California one of these days. Clam chowder bread bowl is the bomb! But switching it up with other things is so much fun too!
This is totally my kind of meal. I'm definitely going to use this!
Oh yay!! I'm so glad to hear that, Danielle!
