The Chopped Italian Sandwich, a viral sensation on TikTok, is a fun new way to eat Italian subs. Cold cuts, tomato, lettuce, onion, banana peppers, and provolone are finely chopped before getting bathed in dressing. Serve on a sub roll for a scrumptious lunch or dinner!
I might be a little late to the party, but better late than never! I just recently discovered this viral sandwich on TikTok and had to give it a spin. It was delicious!!! It’s such a fun and novel way to serve and enjoy Italian subs. If you haven’t seen it before, why don’t you give it a try?
What’s to love:
- It’s versatile. Add or substitute ingredients to suit your preference.
- Thoroughly mixed filling allows you to enjoy every ingredient in each bite.
- Prep ahead for easy assembly. Keep the filling and dressing components separate. When ready to serve, combine everything, then fill the rolls. No soggy bread with this prep-ahead method!
This sandwich is not only ideal for a quick, no-cook meal, but it’s also great for other occasions. It’s perfect for picnics, cookouts, game day, or casual gatherings. What’s more, it is so easy to transport! Keep the filling in a container, chilled. When ready to serve, stuff the sub rolls. Or let the attendees make their own.
By the way, instead of sub rolls, you can serve the filling in finger rolls for appetizers or hors d’oeuvres!
You can eyeball the ingredients and add as much or as little as you like. This is not an exact recipe. If you want more meat, add more. Want more lettuce, go crazy! The recipe I provided is the basic one from TikTok. I made small adjustments to suit my taste, and you can do the same!
Ingredients needed:
- Cold cuts—ham, salami, and pepperoni. Feel free to customize it with your favorite deli meat.
- Cheese—sliced provolone. Other cheeses such as mozzarella, Swiss, and Parmesan are also good options.
- Tomato—any kind you like.
- Lettuce—fresh or prepackaged iceberg lettuce. Romaine can also be used. You want a crisp lettuce.
- Red onion—for a sharpness.
- Banana peppers—if you don’t like them, pickles are great substitutes.
- Mayonnaise—adds creaminess and holds the filling together.
- Store-bought Italian salad dressing—choose your favorite.
- Red wine vinegar—adds extra tang.
- Italian seasoning—to reinforce the Italian flavor profile.
- Salt and pepper—to round out the flavors.
- Sub rolls—for housing all the deliciousness. Or any crusty bread will work…French bread, Italian bread, Portuguese pops.
Recipe highlights:
- Place lettuce, cold cuts, tomato, onion, banana peppers, and provolone cheese on the cutting board.
- Start chopping.
- And continue chopping the heck out of it.
- Add mayonnaise, red wine vinegar, Italian dressing, Italian seasoning, sat and pepper.
- Continue chopping and working the dressing mixture into the filling.
- Scoop into sub or hoagie rolls and enjoy.
- Detailed instructions are in the recipe card below.

How to store the filling?
If you are not going to eat right away, store the wet dressing separately from the filling to retain the best texture and crunch. Store both in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. When it’s time to serve, combine the dressing and filling, then stuff the rolls. It’s best to consume the completely mixed filling within a day.
Having said that, I have eaten 3 day-old completely premixed filling, and it was still delicious!

Instructions
- Place lettuce, ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone, onion, banana peppers, and tomato on the cutting board and chop into small bite-size pieces.

Notes:
- For the deli meat and provolone, use 6 regular-size slices of each if you’re not measuring by ounces. It’s best if they are similar in size in diameter. If you use smaller cuts of deli meat, add a few more pieces to the recipe.

I don’t eat many sandwiches. Or any, I guess. But I’d eat this every day if I could get away with it! Great idea.
I’m amazed that you don’t eat sandwiches, Mimi! I try to remove some of the inside of the bread when it’s bulky to reduce carbs. Makes me feel better about eating bread 🙂
This sounds delicious and I’m going to try it. I don’t eat sandwiches very often either. It’s not because of calories or carb’s it’s just some of us don’t eat a lot of bread.
Great! I hope you will give this a try when you’re in a mood for a sandwich!!
Put it in a wrap?
Absolutely!!
I have made something similar to this and just eat without the bread it’s still very filling !!
I agree! It’s good even without the bread!!
Da’ Con On! ☺
Love this! I’m going to go Greek and put it in a pita!
