Making your own bagel chips is easy and saves you money. Cooking them in the microwave does not sacrifice the crispiness or crunchiness of oven baked. Nope! It doesn’t require the best bagel to make either. In fact, any inexpensive supermarket brand will do!

Microwaving is an ideal way to quickly make a small batch of bagel chips. Did you know that it takes less time to make a single serving of bagel chips in the microwave than it takes for the oven to preheat to the proper temp? How about that?

The hardest part about making bagel chips is the slicing of the bagel, but if you have a good serrated knife, it’s a piece of cake. (Day-old bagel is ideal for this, because they are firmer and easier to slice than fresh.) You want cuts that are no more than 1/8-inch thick. They are then brushed with olive oil, sprinkled with everything bagel seasoning, then microwave for about 1.5 to 2 minutes. That’s it!

Recipe hilights:

  • Slice bagel to 1/8-inch thick semi-circles with a serrated knife.
  • Brush tops with olive oil.
  • Add sprinkling of everything bagel seasoning.
  • Place half of the slices on a paper towel lined paper plate in a single layer.
  • Microwave for 1 1/2 minutes.
  • Turn over bagel chips. Microwave for 15-20 seconds or until bagels are crispy and firm.
  • Repeat cooking the remaining half.
  • Refer to recipe card below for detailed instructions and tips.

Tips for best results:

  • Keep an eye on bagels while cooking and remove thinner, faster cooking pieces first.
  • Slight adjustments to cooking time might be needed to accommodate your microwave strength. More powerful microwaves cook faster while less powerful ones require a little more time.

As I mentioned, this method is great for small batches of bagel chips. The recipe is for single bagel, which is a serving for one. I wouldn’t recommend using the microwave method to make bagel chips for a crowd…stick with the conventional oven baking for large batches. Having said that, microwaving is a great alternative for 1 to 3 bagels.

By the way, if you have kids, this would be a perfect recipe to introduce them to cooking or just to have fun. You will need to slice the bagels, but the little ones can help with the rest!

Description

You don’t have to use the oven to make bagel chips. Microwave them! These Microwave Everything Bagel Chips are crispy, crunchy and delicious! They’re much cheaper than store bought. It’s a great way to make a small batch for a snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Cut bagel in half horizontally. Cut each in half into a semi circle. Slice each piece into 1/8-inch thick semi-circles with a serrated knife.
  2. Brush tops of each piece with olive oil.
  3. Add sprinkling of everything bagel seasoning.
  4. Line a paper plate with a couple layers of paper towels. Place bagel slices in a single layer over paper towels. Don’t overlap. Unless the bagel is small, you will need to cook in two batches.
  5. Microwave on high for 1 1/2 minutes.
  6. Transfer any thinner bagel chips that have become crisp onto a cooling rack or paper towel lined surface.
  7. Turn over the remaining bagel chips. Microwave for 15-20 seconds or until bagels are firm and crispy. Avoid overcooking. Bagel chips will harden more as they cool.
  8. Check as chips cook and remove any that crisp up faster than the others.
  9. Repeat cooking the second batch.
  10. Serve alone, with cream cheese or dip of choice.
  11. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
  12. Makes one serving.

Notes

  • Use a serrated knife to make slicing easy.
  • Firm and dense bagel is easier to thinly slice. Soft bagel is a little harder. For best results, cut soft bagel in half horizontally and freeze at least 20 minutes to firm up prior to slicing.
  • Cut slices no more 1/8-inch thick. If too thick, they will take longer to cook and can get too hard.
  • Check on bagels while cooking. Thinner slices cook up faster and need to be removed earlier than thicker ones.
  • Chips will continue to harden up slightly once cooled. It’s best not to overcook.
  • Keep in mind that different strength microwave ovens cook at different speed. The time given is based on a 1000W microwave oven. Adjust your cooking time according to your wattage—stronger wattage require less time and weaker will need more time.
