If you have been following this blog, you know that I am enjoying a little R&R this week. I was going to skip a post, but this little blog and you are always on my mind, so much so that I’m taking a little time off from my little time off to share a new post. But after this blogging business, I will immediately be getting back to relaxation, spirited beverages, highly caloric food, and good company.
My family is spending this week with my sister and her husband. They flew in from Colorado for their annual visit, which we always look forward to. They are huge seafood lovers, and when they are here, it’s a week of endless seafood — all day, every day (you can see a sample of one of our feasts on my Facebook and Instagram pages). Since Colorado is not exactly the land of plenty when it comes to seafood, my guests take advantage of every opportunity to eat it when in New England. My husband, children, and I are always there to support their endeavors and happily partake! Hee hee.
My sister and brother-in-law are building a house in the mountains in Colorado. This is the second one that they will have built in the mountains…by themselves…from the ground up. It all starts with clearing the land, followed by digging for well water, which is one of the few things that is outsourced. All the subsequent milestones: laying the foundation, framing, roofing, siding, windows, and doors installation, are a product of their blood, sweat, and tears. This is followed by more blood, sweat, and tears to install the kitchen and bathroom, plumbing, flooring, and most of the electrical. In the end, the result is a gorgeous home and the pride of creating something magnificent on their own.
Get this! They plan to build another one down the road. Crazy people!! I tease them about getting their own TV show. Have you seen the show Fixer Upper on HGTV? When I first saw it, I couldn’t believe how similar my brother-in-law is to Chip Gaines. I swear they are long-lost brothers! Not only do they look like they could be brothers, but their mannerisms and personalities are uncannily alike—goofy, playful, spontaneous, slightly reckless, with a tendency for some ”did he really do that?” moves.
Well, I guess I rambled long enough, so I’ll move onto the popsicles. First of all, is mid-August too late to post a popsicle recipe? It’s not, right? Summer is still with us, so a cool, refreshing popsicle is always in order. And when is it appropriate to eat popsicles for breakfast? When it has low-fat yogurt, grape-nuts, strawberries, and honey! It is wholesome and healthy and gets you off to a good start in the morning.
For this breakfast popsicle, plain regular or Greek yogurt can be used. Honey adds a touch of natural sweetness. Of course, you can adjust the quantity to suit your desired sweetness level. I also added mini chocolate morsels…because chocolate makes everything better (and it adds more sweetness). But if you want to keep it entirely healthy, omit the chocolate morsels. It won’t hurt my feelings.
After 4 days of eating like I had the metabolism of a 20-year-old, these healthy popsicles were a welcoming healthy reprieve. As for the remainder of the week, I’ll continue to eat like the calories don’t count, but next week is payback via a diet consisting of rabbit food ☹️

Have a blast with your family!! I woke up to another hot and humid morning. Your strawberry pops would have made the BEST breakfast 🙂
It's really impressive that your sister and brother-in-law are building their own house! They should get their own show! 🙂 These popsicles are perfect for the warm, hazy days we've been having. I have never tried Grape-nuts cereal before, but I like the idea of a little crunch. Have fun with your family!
Building a house from the ground up is a LOT of work. I would be all over the seafood too if I came to visit…hmmm should I come visit? These look so healthy and satisfying!!
Thanks, Liz! Those kinds of days are best spent indoors. I hope it will be a little more comfortable this weekend!
Thank you, Marie. I'm getting sad already now that my week is almost over. My sister and her husband must love the whole process deep down inside to keep on doing building houses. And to be honest, I don't eat the grape-nuts as cereal…but I love to make grape-nut pudding and these popsicles with them.
I would love to have you here! The more is definitely the merrier! I would not want to do what my sister and brother-in-law are doing, but they don't seem to mind the hard work at all. They are hard core do-it-yourselfers!
Hi Thao, good that you're back, I have a lot to catch up since May. I love the new look of your blog, it is so light and airy. And these popsicles sound and look great, I would love some. 🙂
Hi Adina. I'm glad to be back, and you're too kind! I'm so glad to be connecting with you again! 🙂
Yay to summer and spending lots of time with family!! The seafood is the best here (especially the scallops YUM!) Saw your lobster photo the other day and was wondering if you go them at Market Basket. We bought 6 there last week for just the 2 of us because they were on sale for $4.99lb!! WOOOHOOO to living in New England…except in the winter. lol 🙂
These popsicles look so good! I loved Grape Nuts as a child so I know I'm going to love this recipe. Need to start eating popsicles for breakfast so I'll be making them soon.
I totally agree on both accounts, Karrie — seafood is the best part of living in NE and winter is the worst! Yes, we got our lobsters at MB for $4.99 lb! Woo hooo!!! There was a 4 hour wait but it was worth it!! We had them for dinner but it didn't stop us from pigging out on seafood for lunch. My brother-in-law ordered steamed mussels and 2 double stuffed lobster rolls (making the most of his seafood eating opportunity)! I'm impressed that you liked grape nuts as a child! Lucky Charms, Fruity Pebbles, and Corn Pops were more my speed. I hope you'll like the popsicles! I use grape nuts mainly for grape nut pudding but these popsicle have become my second favorite way to use them.
This is great! Grape nuts in a popsicle? 🙂 love! And I think this can count as diet food right? 😉 Ok a girl can dream haha
It's never too late for popsicles :). It's like 1000 degrees outside today so I'd happily eat one (or five) of these :). Grape-nuts are one of my favorite things! I loooove the sound of these!
I totally can, Heather! I look at it this way—better one or two of these than a strawberry shortcake popsicle, which happens to be my weakness! 🙂
Stay cool Kelsie!! My parents are funny. When I'm on the phone with them, they always sound a bit jealous when somewhere else in AZ gets rain. It's a nice reprieve from the heat and dryness. That's awesome how Grap-Nuts are on your faves list! These are the popsicles for you! 🙂
I hope you enjoyed your time off! And all that seafood. 🙂 Colorado is a lovely place, but I'd miss my lobster. As for the yogurt popsicles, they look so fresh and healthy. I would never have thought of using Grape Nuts! That's a good idea.
All of my family live across the country, so it is such a treat to spend time with them. I agree with you, Annemarie, Colorado is a nice but I'd miss seafood. Plus it's not south enough for me. I need to get away from the snow. 🙂 I'm glad you like the popsicles! Grape-Nuts works beautifully.
These strawberry grape popsicles look amazing! and your instructions look quite easy too! I wonder why I haven't tried making popsicles yet. Will have a go when Australia is warmer in a few months.
I hope summer starts early for you! Is it true that winters are not as crippling Australia as they are here in the northern parts of the US? If it is then, I'd much rather spend winters where you are I'm not looking forward the what's coming in a few months. I hope you try making popsicles, Juvenilia. They are fun!
