Crispy Fried Green Beans

For an unexpectedly delicious appetizer, try Crispy Fried Green Beans. Green beans are dipped in a wet batter and deep-fried until golden brown. They are perfectly tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. And with a honey mustard dipping sauce, they are finger-licking good!

Fried Green Beans

The next time you have guests, wow them with fried green beans. They make a fantastic appetizer or finger food for a party. The green beans are tender and the batter is light and crispy. Even though they are delicious alone, serve with a dipping sauce to take it up a level!

Easy to make and quick fry time: the wet batter takes minutes to prepare and is used immediately. No wait time! In addition, each batch of green beans takes only 2-3 minutes to fry!

Simple dipping sauce: the honey mustard dipping sauce takes 2 minutes to assemble. It’s delicious but feel free to use your own! Lemon aioli, bang bang sauce, ranch dressing, sriracha mayo, or remoulade sauce is super tasty with fried green beans!

Picky eater friendly: even non-vegetable eaters, like my husband, approve these green beans. The crispy batter and dipping sauce make eating the vegetable a delight!

Fried Green Beans
  • Green beans
  • All-purpose flour
  • Cornstarch
  • Seltzer water
  • Spices—salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika
  • Mayonnaise
  • Honey
  • Mustard
  • Hot sauce

Use fresh green beans. I don’t recommend frozen because they are watery. In addition, the consistency is not comparable to fresh green beans.

  • Preheat 3/4-inch oil in a large frying pan or saute pan to 360° F.
  • To make the dipping sauce, whisk all the ingredients in a bowl. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Place 1/2 cup flour in a shallow bowl. Add the remaining flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika in a second shallow bowl. Whisk to blend. Next, add seltzer water until the mixture is smooth.
  • Place a handful of green beans in the plain flour, then move them around to coat with the flour.
  • Next, drop the green beans into the wet batter. Submerge them to apply an even coating.
  • Gently drop the green beans into the hot oil. Leave spaces between each to avoid sticking. Fry for 3 minutes or until lightly golden, turning over halfway.
  • Transfer them to a cooling rack set over a baking sheet to drain.
  • While the green beans cook, coat another handful in the flour, then the wet batter. Drop into the hot oil when ready to fry. Continue dredging and frying until all the green beans are fried.

I don’t recommend other methods of cooking the green beans, because they are coated with a runny wet batter. Consequently, the batter will slide off the beans before it has time to cook and crisp up.

Fried Green Beans

Good news! You don’t have to blanch the green beans before frying them. They become perfectly tender during the short fry time in the hot oil. There is no need to do extra work!

Fried green beans are best consumed immediately. Leftovers are never as crispy as freshly made ones.

But if you want to store leftovers, allow them to cool completely before storing. I recommend freezing over refrigeration because the green beans reheat better when frozen. They are crispier than refrigerated ones. Store green beans in an airtight container for refrigeration and a freezer-safe container for freezing.

Refrigerate the green beans for up to 4 days and freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheat the green beans in the oven or an air fryer until crispy and heated through. It’s not necessary to defrost the frozen green beans. They only need a few seconds more cooking time than refrigerated ones.

  • Frying pan or saute pan—this 12-inch saute pan is large enough to cook the green beans in fewer batches, and deep enough to contain much of the splashing. This tri-ply stainless steel pan has cool touch handles and works on all stovetops.
  • Splatter screen—this set of 3 varying-size stainless steel fine mesh screens has stainless steel wire handles with comfort grips. They do a great job at containing grease splash.
  • Kitchen tongs—these are stainless steel tongs with a silicone head and non-slip handles. I like the silicone tips because they are gentle on the green beans and the batter.
  • Dredging dishes—this set of two 1-quart tempered glass baking dishes is ideal for dredging and coating the green beans. But any shallow container you have is fine.
  • Wire whisk—for mixing the batter. This 8-inch stainless steel whisk has counterweighted wires to reduce wrist fatigue.

  6. Gently drop the green beans into the hot oil. Leave spaces between each to avoid sticking. Fry for 3 minutes or until lightly golden, turning over halfway.
