It’s only the beginning of winter. During a typical year, my backyard will look like this for the next four months…no kidding. This picture has well over a foot of snow on the ground.

As luck would have it, my yard is always the last on the street to defrost from the winter freeze. It will have large patches of snow and ice long after the neighbors have disappeared. There have been years when there were no visible signs of grass until the end of April!!

Thank goodness for the little things that make winter more bearable. One of them is a nice cup of hot chocolate. This hot chocolate recipe uses one of my favorite canned products in the whole wide world. Sweetened condensed milk!!

Hot Cocoa with Sweetened Condensed Milk

My twist on hot cocoa uses sweetened condensed milk as a sweetener. It adds a delectable richness and flavor to the drink. For a special touch, top it off with a drizzle of more sweetened condensed milk. Don’t skip this step, as it adds a distinctive layer of flavor.

Believe me, you would not want to drink it any other way!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Add water, cocoa, coffee, and sugar to a medium saucepan over medium heat. Use a wire whisk to blend smoothly. Allow the mixture to come to a gentle boil (reduce heat if needed) for a couple of minutes to dissolve the solids thoroughly. Use a rubber spatula to constantly stir the bottom and sides of the pan to prevent sticking.
  2. Add milk and sweetened condensed milk, whisking until smooth. Heat through. Do not boil. Remove from heat and add vanilla.
  3. Pour into a cup. Drizzle with additional sweetened condensed milk. Cold is best, as it stays afloat longer than room-temperature sweetened condensed milk. Top with a dollop of whipped cream.
  4. Makes 4 servings.
