Hot Dog Mac & Cheese Pie

I created this savory pie with kids in mind, but I have to admit—it’s hard for me to stop myself from grabbing an oversized slice. Every child I’ve ever known would devour this macaroni pie. Its base is made from one of the all-time favorites, Kraft Mac & Cheese, made even better with shredded cheddar and studded with tender hot dog slices. It’s irresistibly creamy and cheesy, with an extra layer of melted cheese on top that takes the decadence up a notch. The flaky pie crust adds an unexpected crunch and buttery flakiness that perfectly contrasts the rich, gooey filling. And the cherry on top? It’s a 6-ingredient recipe and so easy to make!

This easy savory pie is ideal for kid-related occasions—birthday parties, sleepovers, or anytime you need a kid-friendly meal—yet it’s a hit with the entire family.

Hot Dog Mac & Cheese Pie
  • Boxed macaroni and cheese —I use Kraft Mac & Cheese, but any brand works. Just make sure it’s about 7.25 ounces, and boil the macaroni just until it’s al dente, as it will continue to cook in the oven.
  • Hot dogs—use your favorite brand. I like Kayam skinkless franks.
  • Whole milk—to make the base of the cheese sauce. You can use full-fat milk or reduced-fat fat.
  • Freshly grated cheese—this recipe uses yellow cheddar, but feel free to use any cheese that melts well, such as Monterey Jack or American. You can use prepackaged shredded cheese, but it won’t have the same creamy consistency as freshly grated cheese.
  • Butter—for richness and flavor.
  • Pie crust—use a store-bought 9-inch pie crust of your choice. Only one crust is needed.
  • Set the pie crust in a 9-inch pie pan and crimp the edges. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  • Cook the macaroni according to the package directions, but only until al dente. Drain and set aside. Reserve the cheese packet.
  • Meanwhile, make the sauce by melting butter over medium heat until it’s mostly melted. Add the milk, then the cheese packet, whisking until thickened and smooth.
  • Gradually add half of the shredded cheese, whisking until smooth.
  • Add the hot dogs and macaroni. Mix to combine. Set aside to cool.
  • Pour the mac and cheese into the pie crust, then top with the remaining shredded cheese.
  • Bake in a preheated 350° F oven for 30-35 minutes. Let the pie rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.
  • Detailed instructions are in the recipe card below.
  • Replace the hot dogs with turkey hot dogs, cooked Italian sausage, kielbasa, cooked ground beef, linguica, or chorizo.
  • Add chopped vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, or spinach.
  • Substitute the cheese with Provolone, Fontina, Monterey Jack, or a combination.

Leftovers will not be as gooey as freshly baked, but will still be delicious when stored and reheated. To store, place it in an airtight container and refrigerate for 3-4 days. Freezing is not recommended because the macaroni may become too dry once frozen.

To reheat, microwave in a microwave-safe bowl until it’s warmed through. For a crispier crust, reheat in the oven at 350° F until heated through.

Description

This Hot Dog Mac and Cheese Pie combines a gooey macaroni and cheese filling with savory hot dog chunks, all tucked into a flaky pie crust. Topped with shredded cheese and baked until perfectly melty, this comforting dish is a fun, satisfying main that kids—and kids at heart—will absolutely love.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350° F. Place the rack in the lower half of the oven.
  2. Baking on the lower half of the oven ensures that the pie crust cooks properly and prevents sogginess.

  3. Set the pie crust in a pie pan and crimp the edges. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  4. Cook the macaroni according to the package directions, but only until al dente. Drain and set aside. Set aside the cheese packet.
  5. Meanwhile, make the cheese sauce by melting butter over medium heat until mostly melted. Add milk and whisk in the cheese packet until smooth and heated through. Gradually add half of the shredded cheddar, a handful at a time, whisking constantly until the sauce becomes thick and creamy.
  6. Remove the pan from the heat if the sauce boils after adding the cheese to prevent the cheese from separating.

  7. Add the hot dogs and macaroni. Mix to combine. Set aside to cool.
  8. I suggest placing the pan in the refrigerator or transferring the mac and cheese to a shallow container to expedite cooling. If you’re in a hurry, you can add slightly warm macaroni to the pie crust, but be sure to work quickly to get the pie in the oven.

  9. Pour the filling into the pie crust. Top with the remaining shredded cheese and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the crust is lightly browned and the cheese is bubbly. Let the pie rest, loosely tented, for 5-10 minutes to set the filling before serving.
  10. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
