Parmesan Bacon Breadsticks

I came across this breadstick recipe about 20 years ago and have made it for countless occasions since. As much as I would like to give credit where credit is due, I can’t recall where it came from. One thing I know for sure, though, is that they get devoured quickly!

The recipe (if you can call it that) is a no-brainer and easy to make. There are only 3 ingredients… store-bought bread dough, bacon, and Parmesan cheese. All you have to do is wrap the bread dough in bacon and bake. Once out of the oven, coat with Parmesan cheese and enjoy!!!

  • Preheat oven to 375° F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Unroll the bread dough and spread it into a rectangle. Starting on one of the longer sides, cut the dough into 1-inch thick strips.
  • Working with the breadstick on the work surface, coil a strip of bacon around each it.
  • Transfer to the baking sheet. Bake for 18-22 minutes or until bacon is crispy and cooked through.
  • Coat hot breadsticks in grated Parmesan cheese, then serve!
  • Detailed instructions are in the recipe card section below.

Variations:

These babies are perfect as is, but they are super versatile. Here are some variation ideas:

  • Make spicy with red pepper flakes or minced up pickled peppers added to the Parmesan cheese.
  • Pizza dough can be substituted for bread dough.
  • Combine or replace Parmesan with other cheeses, such as Pecorino Romano or Asiago.
  • Serve with a dipping sauce of your choice.

Storing and reheating:

Refrigeration: Allow to cool completely before storing. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in an oven or microwave until hot throughout.

Freezing: Allow to cool completely. Then, freeze the baked breadsticks in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Reheat in the microwave or a 350° F oven until heated through. If reheating from frozen, the breadsticks require just a little more cooking time.

Pro tips:

  • Avoid thick-cut bacon as it requires a longer cooking time than the breadsticks.
  • Keep the bread dough on the work surface while wrapping bacon around it to prevent gravity from overstretching the dough.
  • If the cheese does not stick to the breadsticks, dip them into the bacon fat on the baking sheet. The fat will help the cheese adhere. If there isn’t enough bacon fat, use olive oil or melted butter.
  • Using parchment paper for easy release of baked breadsticks is recommended but optional.

The next time you need bacon recipe ideas or appetizer bacon recipes, these tasty little breadsticks are what you’re looking for!
