I don’t use my dishwasher much, usually saving it for big holidays or dinner parties. But on those nights when I’m just too tired to face a sink full of dirty dishes, oven roasting bags are my secret weapon. I can cook a complete, flavorful one-pan meal with zero scrubbing required. The bag bakes right on a sheet pan. When dinner is over, I just throw the bag away and give the pan a quick rinse.
That brings me to this easy chicken dinner, which takes just 10 minutes to prepare and about 50 minutes to bake. In one hour, you’ll have a comforting, wholesome meal ready to enjoy—and it’s a breeze to put together.
Simply chop the potatoes, carrots, and onion and add them to the roasting bag, then tuck in the drumsticks. Mix the spices with the chicken broth and oil, pour the mixture into the bag, and give everything a good massage to coat. Seal the bag and pop it in the oven. That’s it! Dinner doesn’t get much easier than this.
Why You’ll Love This:
- Zero scrubbing: All the messy stuff is in the bag that gets trashed.
- Juicy chicken: Works perfectly for drumsticks, thighs, or legs.
- Fall-off-the-bone tender: Aim for an internal temperature 185° F and 195° F for the best chicken texture.
- Super customizable: Toss in whatever veggies you like—sweet potato, butternut squash, and cauliflower are perfect here. Corn is my favorite addition, and I was fully ready to use it in the recipe. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize I had forgotten to add it until after I did the photoshoot for this post. 🙁

Pro tip:
This oven-roasted chicken recipe is wonderfully simple and straightforward. My only tip is for the vegetables: cut them to the recipe’s recommended sizes so they cook evenly. Following the directions yields vegetables (particularly the carrots) that are tender but with a little firmness. However, if you prefer them completely soft, simply remove the chicken from the baking bag to keep it warm, then return the vegetables to the oven until they reach your desired tenderness.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F.
- Add 1 tablespoon of flour to the oven bag and shake to coat the inside, which helps prevent the bag from bursting. Place it on a large baking sheet. Next, chop the vegetables and add them to the bag along with the drumsticks.
- Combine all the seasonings, chicken broth, and olive oil in a bowl, whisk to blend, and then pour the mixture into the bag.
- Twist the bag closed, massage the seasoning into the chicken and vegetables, and then secure it with the provided oven bag tie. Finally, make a few half-inch slits on the top of the bag to let steam escape.
- Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the chicken reaches between 185°F and 195°F and the vegetables are tender.
- Makes 4 servings.
Cut vegetables to the specified size so they cook at the same rate as the chicken. Thicker pieces will require more time than the chicken.
While chicken is safely cooked at 165°F, dark meat (like drumsticks) requires extra time to become fork-tender. If your vegetables need more time, pull the chicken out and keep it warm, then let the veggies finish cooking.
